PrettyBrownDancers came about on January 15, 2016. It was after watching an episode of Bring It! that an idea of starting a blog highlighting black and brown dancers was born. At first, I was going to build a blog dedicated to black and brown ballerinas. Brown Girls Do Ballet, Inc. beat me to the punch. Next, I found another social media page dedicated to black men and women dancers. However, there was not a page dedicated to all dance genres and styles that included Historically Black Colleges and Universities majorette dance. Shortly after, I brainstorm some names and made an Instragram account #PrettyBrownDancers” was born.
Over the years, I introduced dancers from toddlers to adults. From those starting in the baby stages of dance to those dancing for prestigious companies. I relatively kept private about the identity of myself but I can tell you (and many can confirm this), there is an adult woman behind this blog. During my childhood, I was not in the fortunate space to go to a dance school. However, I joined a high school dance line for a short time and participated in a dance team throughout my college years. Therefore, I created a black owned dance directory. It includes dance schools and teams across the world.
PrettyBrownDancers is for…
The black girl faced with adversity and obstacles…
Who have to go through hurdles, road blocks, and thrown stones of colorism, bigorty, racism , and misogny…
Who need to be guided to positive energy and connected through spirituality…
Who need to be inspired and understand that there is always a light at the end of a dark cold tunnel…
Who need to see that they are beautiful and talent through love and art (not only dance)…
Who need to see and KNOW that they do matter and have a place in this world…
